MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The only Planned Parenthood in Upper Michigan announced it will be closing Wednesday night, leaving a gap in reproductive health services.
The Planned Parenthood on Third St. in Marquette will be closing effective Apr. 30th.
The closure comes as Planned Parenthood announced it was also shutting down clinics in Petoskey and Jackson.
Though commonly associated with abortion services, OBGYN Associates of Marquette’s Dr. Ann Lozier says this closure will leave broader gaps for reproductive health care in the Upper Peninsula.
“Planned Parenthood also provides a pretty wide array of services, including general health maintenance exams, Pap smear testing,” Dr. Lozier said. “They do vaccinations for HPV, screening for sexually transmitted infections and they provide a really wide array of contraception care services so that people can get birth control.”
Marquette County Health Department Community Health Director Brianna Mileski says her clinic, like OBGYN Associates of Marquette, can fill some of the gaps this closure will create.
“Marquette County has appointments available for birth control, STI testing, HIV testing,” Mileski said. “We accept insurance. We have a sliding fee scale.”
To supplement the loss in services, Planned Parenthood says it’s working to expand its Virtual Health Center to offer telehealth seven days a week.
“You can have that more natural conversation that flows, maybe bring up some other issues,” Mileski said. “I know a lot of people in our community have issues accessing the internet or might not have a reliable way to do that.”
OBGYN Associates of Marquette is working to hire new staff to accommodate the demand for services.
In a statement from UP Health System, the administration says it’s monitoring the impacts of the closure:
“We are aware of recent changes in our area and recognize that recent executive orders are raising concerns about access to care. These concerns are not unique to our organization, as healthcare providers across the region and the country are also facing similar challenges. While it is too early to determine specific impacts, we are actively monitoring the situation. As updates become available, we will share information with our community in a timely and transparent manner. UP Health System remains committed to delivering high-quality care to those we serve.”
Next door to the Marquette Planned Parenthood is the Care Clinic.
In a statement, the Care Clinic said:
“We were just as shocked as everybody else… We’ve been neighbors for a long time and so my first thought was shock. I think we all felt kind of sad for the people who worked there to be suddenly out of a job—that’s never good to deal with. So, that was our first thought was sympathy for the staff at the Planned Parenthood to have to find new jobs and process this and for the people who received services there who are now scrambling to find replacements for those. At the Care Clinic, we are a limited medical facility, so we are licensed to do some medical procedures. We are not a full medical facility, so we cannot pick up the baton for the full range of services. We do limited STI and STD testing and treatment. We have a registered nurse on staff. We also offer ultrasounds for dating and preventative services—to make sure it’s a viable pregnancy and the mother is safe. We have an ultrasound tech who is licensed to do those and then we have a doctor who oversees everything done medically at the Care Clinic. Most of our services for the family then also go towards things like educational classes for parents… resources closets with diapers, wipes, and clothes, etc. We try to be a listening ear and provide support to families who don’t feel like they have them.”
